Tradition runs deep at the home of the Denver Broncos. On game days at Empower Field at Mile High, fans keep long-standing traditions alive—chanting “IN-COM-PLETE!” whenever an opposing quarterback misses a pass and creating the thunderous rumble known as “Mile High Thunder,” the sound of tens of thousands of fans stomping their feet. These traditions date back to the Broncos’ former home, Mile High Stadium. The Broncos were charter members of the American Football League and began play in 1960 at what was then called Bears Stadium. The venue was later expanded and renamed Mile High Stadium, where the team played for more than four decades. While the stadium was beloved by fans and hosted many memorable Broncos teams, by the late 1990s it lacked the modern amenities found in newer NFL facilities. Owner Pat Bowlen pushed for the construction of a new stadium that could provide an updated fan experience.
Public financing for the project was initially controversial, but in November 1998 voters approved a plan to build a new stadium adjacent to Mile High Stadium. During the Broncos’ final season at their longtime home in 2000, fans could see the new facility rising next door. The stadium originally opened as Invesco Field after Invesco purchased the naming rights. It was later renamed Sports Authority Field in 2011, temporarily called Broncos Stadium during the 2018 season, and ultimately became Empower Field at Mile High in 2019 following a naming rights agreement with Empower Retirement through 2039.

The Broncos played their first game at the stadium on September 10, 2001, defeating the New York Giants. Designed in a horseshoe configuration, the stadium features three tiers of seating with a capacity of more than 76,000. The lower deck fully surrounds the field, while the primary video scoreboard dominates the south end zone. Perched atop that board is a large replica of a bucking bronco named “Bucky.” In the upper deck of the north end zone, blue, white, and orange seats form the Broncos’ iconic logo, with additional videoboards positioned nearby.
Empower Field at Mile High offers a wide range of fan amenities. The Sports Legends Mall and Legacy Walk host pregame activities outside the stadium, while inside fans can visit the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame and the Broncos team store. Prior to the 2013 season, a $32 million investment upgraded the stadium’s technology and fan experience, including a new sound system, expanded concourses, and a massive new south-end-zone videoboard measuring 220 feet by 40 feet—one of the largest in the NFL.
Beyond the action on the field, the stadium also features a collection of public art installations surrounding its gates. These sculptures—including “Pass Through the Land,” “Equipment Field,” “Pigskin Variations,” and “The Broncos”—add a distinctive cultural element to the venue and help make Empower Field at Mile High one of the NFL’s most recognizable stadium environments.
