Rendering of the Washington Commanders new stadium

Washington, DC

Since 1997 the Washington Commanders have played at Northwest Stadium in Landover, MD. Prior to 1997 the team spent over three decades at RFK Stadium. Longtime fans recall many great memories and teams that played at RFK Stadium as it was a small intimate stadium where fans were close to the action. Northwest Stadium is a massive stadium that seats nearly 90,000 fans and is not situated in an ideal location.

For more than a decade the Commanders explored locations to build a new stadium throughout the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia). The ideal location has always been the site of RFK Stadium and in April 2025 the Washington Commanders announced plans to build a new stadium here. At an estimated cost of nearly $4 billion, tentative plans call for the stadium to seat 65,000 fans and open in Fall 2030. The Commanders will commit $2.7 billion towards the project. The stadium will have a dome but it has yet to be determined whether it will be retractable. The entire project will included a mix of housing, retail and open space. Construction will likely start in late 2026 or early 2027.
